I seem to go through a lot of lighting cables and they keep wearing out. I had one cable that was frayed pretty bad and tried using some liquid tape that I happened to have and it worked great. White liquid tape is available and I plan on putting it on all cables so they don't wear out. Once you have a short it is to late to repair it.

my wife's iPhone 5 lightning cable (about a year old) and my 5S lightning cable (6 months) are not always connecting to her phone (I no longer have the 5S)

my 30-pin works just fine after many years.

not anything helpful but just another thought to this. (the lightning cables don't look worn out on the outside)
