How to get my phone number to work on the new iPhone 6?

I've always bought a phone in the apple store and this will be my first year getting it in the mail. Could someone tell me how I'd go about making the iPhone 6 my primary phone? Or is this something that Apple does before they ship it so it's ready go use right away?

Apple takes care of it. It will work right out of the box (it'll need charging/setup). Really easy.

Once you activate your new phone from the mail the old one will stop having service.. You'll still be able to use the apps and stuff just not make phone calls or text.
