How to get read mail messages to update on the gmail server?

I am now running 10.8.2 after a recent upgrade from 10.6.8 and have decided to try out Apple Mail again after the various improvements.

When I read a message in Apple Mail through my gmail account, this change is not reflected on the web server. I.e. when I log into gmail from a web browser all the messages that I read in Apple Mail are still shown as unread mail by gmail.

How can I get the server to reflect messages I read in Apple Mail?

Come to think of it, does anyone use gmail and apple mail together? Or is this not a popular way to go?
