If you need replacement ear cushions for your AirPods Max either due to damage to the existing cushion or to have another color option, there's good news -- as of January, Apple is selling replacements.

How to Buy New Ear Cushions

Ear cushions can be purchased from Apple's online site for $69, and that price point includes both the left and right replacement cushions.

Apple sells ear cushions in all of the available AirPods Max colors so you can get the same color you had before or experiment with new color combinations.

How to Swap Out AirPods Max Ear Cushions

Ear cushions attach to the AirPods Max ear cups magnetically, so it's incredibly easy to swap them out once you have a set of replacement cushions available.
  1. Take the AirPods Max out of the case.
  2. Unbox the new ear cushions from Apple.

  3. Grasp the right ear cushion in your hand and pull upwards with a firm but gentle motion to remove the existing cushion.

  4. Repeat for the left side.

  5. Take the right replacement cushion and position it over the right ear cup, which is denoted with an "R" on the side of the cup.

  6. Gently set the ear cushion in place, where it will snap down thanks to the magnets.
  7. Repeat for the left side.
That's all there is to it. Removing the AirPods Max ear cushions and replacing them couldn't be simpler. Prior to the AirPods Max launch, there were rumors that Apple was aiming for the headphones to be customizable, so in the future, we could see additional ear cup color options made available for personalization purposes.

I'm wondering why people are replacing them. These were just released in December. Are they not lasting long? Do people just like to mix up the colors? Or, this is just for the future?

I don’t necessarily think people are replacing them at this point in time, it’s just a consideration when you actually ‘need to replace’ them, this is how you do it whenever that time is.

Yes, Dan put them on wrong in the video. But you're right, maybe I should take it out to prevent confusion.

Looks like they fit either way, aside from the inner "hole"? In my opinion, that's poor design. They should have a groove or something to prevent them from being put on the wrong way... to make it easier for blind users to install them correctly.

Thanks for the tutorial. The 7 steps were really helpful! Now I’ll repeat them for the other side.

Why don’t you also say “how to remove the old cushions and throw them away“ ? Oh, and “how to pour a cup of coffee when you wake up in the morning“ ?

So literal with the wording. I’m sure a monkey could figure out how to put a cushion on the headphones — or RTFM.

I feel like this really didn’t need an article or tutorial video lol a more useful video would be the airpods max with different ear cushion combinations- that way we don’t rely on the renders.

It's not really Apple related but maybe we can make it work.

You’re taking a lot of heat on this ‘filler’ article, probably wasn’t necessary, given the obvious. To me, this article was forced just to for the sake of ‘posting something’. Just sayin’.

They aren't. They're just flexing to show that they spent $70 on extra headphone cushions.

I personally would like a review video comparing the Beats Studio3 Wireless to the AirPods Max. I realize the AirPods Max are significantly better, but for anyone upgrading it would be useful.

This was mostly published to show Dan's unboxing of the ear cushions, which we just did today and I thought might be of interest. Eric suggested I publish it quietly because it is a fairly simple concept, but I chose to publish it this way since there wasn't a lot going on, so I deserve the comments.

I do hope it's ultimately useful in the future for those who aren't aware replacement cushions are available.
