iPad How to get rid of html (?) code when displaying subtitles in movies?

Hi,

I've converted an MKV file to an MP4 file with a soft subtitle (from a SRT file). When playing the movie on my iPad I can enable the subtitle but I don't just get the text, I also get <font blabla> before the text and </font> after the text. How can I disable or avoid this?

I know it's to format the subtitle text but the iPad video app doesn't seem to understand this.
