How to get suid on an external drive

I have a new, sealed iMac and so I bought an external SSD to help me out. I want to move a bunch of Applications there, but need to be able to have files with the suid bit set show up properly. osx mounts nosuid by default and I cannot see how to override this. It does not seem to be affected by autofs.conf.

Any help would be appreciated.
