How to HACKTIVATE iPhone 3GS

So I followed this video on youtube, and I have the 5.1 ipsw and redsnow 0.9.10b6. Now, in the video it says that my iPhone needs to say NO SIM, but my iPhone says No Service. I have a few questions, is it okay for me to use this outdated version of redsn0w and 5.1 ipsw for my 5.1.1 iPhone? and is it okay to proceed even though my iPhone says no service? THANKS!

Upgrade your redsnow to latest version. It can't hurt... But you should be able to proceed.

How about the ipsw? in one video it said that i'm suppose to get 5.1 ipsw, but in another it says i need to get my curent ipsw... AND another question, should my sim be in while hacktivating?

If you update your redsnow you won't need any ipsw and I don't think it matters if you have your sim in or not. Preferably no

There is no untether for 5.1, only a tethered jailbreak.

If you need to unlock, make sure you restore while preserving your BB with a custom IPSW

Otherwise upgrade to stock 5.1.1

Use latest redsn0w to jailbreak on 5.1.1

Make one yourself:

Download 5.1.1 IPSW from here:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
Next download redsn0w
Open redsn0w
Go to Extras
Select custom IPSW
select the 5.1.1 you downloaded
redsn0w will now make a NO_BB custom IPSW
put your phone in DFU-mode
in iTunes ALT-restore(mac) or SHIFT-restore(win) with the custom NO_BB IPSW

After that use redsn0w to jailbreak, during the process redsn0w will give you the option to activate the phone, do so.

What baseband do you have now and what is the 3-5 serial numbers? Read up on jailbreaking and unlocking.
