How to have external display at native resolution?

I am using my 2008 Unibody Macbook and under Mountain Lion all I have is display mirroring. The native resolution of the external monitor is 1920x1080P ,but I can only get display mirroring of 1280x800.

Bingo. If you're mirroring then it will use the Macbook's display's resolution. If you want to use the external display's native resolution then you'll have to disable mirroring.
