I've converted some mpg music videos to .mov (if I converted the mpgs's directly I lost the sound completely) so I could then export them to iPod. I use VLC to do so using the following:-
Video: mp4v - bitrate 512kbps scale 1
Audio: mp4a - bitrate 128kbps scale 2

Some of them (not all) sound kind of hollow, like the music is coming through a funnel. Any ideas how I can improve on this?

What kind of audio are you using when you convert to .mov ? Since it's only temporary, can you pick something fat and not so lossy at that point so that VLC has more material to chew on?

Actually I've noticed that it applies to .mov files not mpg which I have converted using VLC. The mpgs just go out of sequence with the sound and video.

I'm not sure what you mean with regards to what kind of audio (probably why I'm not getting good sound quality to begin with)?

The only reason why I'm converting these .mov with VLC files is because otherwise I cannot export them to iPod (m4v format).

I have found the same issues... Hope someone has an answer.
