Disclaimer: I wrote this from a Windows computer, so a few of the words might be different in the actual system preferences.
This is a cool little concept that requires absolutely no software to do.
What you need:
-Any number of MacBooks that you want to use to share the internet connection with
-That number, minus one of Ethernet cables to continue sharing
-A little know-how in order to tweak with system preferences
Steps:
1. Enable internet sharing on all of your MacBooks by doing the following:
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing > Enable Internet Sharing (the checkbox)
Be sure to de-gray the checkbox by specifying how you want to share (Share Ethernet through AirPort, and vice versa)
2. It will give you a warning about the network and how it might mess up if you continue. From here, it's your decision. If you click 'Start', proceed to step 3.
3. From the host, share the Ethernet through Airport. On the receiving computer, share the Airport through Ethernet (two of the computers will be linked by an Ethernet cable). Simply continue the process until you reach the desired destination.
4. The range on the Airport connection is about 50 ft. Anyone connecting and using the internet from there will slow it down, so it's recommended that you set and AirPort password under 'AirPort Options...' in the Internet Sharing sub-tab. You can also make a universal name. I like using the first letter of the first name of the owner of the host computer with the suffix '-fi'
Ex. 'J-fi'
Thanks for reading this tutorial, and I hope to get back to you soon with more. Next tutorial up: How to cleanly and safely copy CD's for personal use
