How to install an OS on external hard drive?

Well this isn't a really Mac Basics question but I didn't know where else to put it.

I have a 160GB WD external hard drive but don't have much use for it now that I have a 640GB. I went to install Linux and Windows XP on it and it didn't work.
Does anybody know how to install an OS onto an external hard drive?
