I just plugged my external drive to my powerbook for the first time. how do i format it? the screen came upwith the tabs to use first aid, erase, partition, raid, and or restore. where do i go from here? thanks!

partition. create one large partition the size of your disk, or chose an alternat configuration of multiple partions if you want. when the disk is partioned, it will automatically format.

and remember to give your disk a creative name! my 200Gb external disk is "final frontier". . . because it gave me a lot of 'space' for data.

But, yep. Partition. Make it HFS+ (Mac OS Extended).
