Apple today released the first public beta of iOS 11 for eligible iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models, allowing users who aren't signed up for the Apple Developer Program to test the software update ahead of its official release in the fall.

iOS 11 is pre-release software, so installing the beta on a secondary device is highly recommended. Due to bugs and other potential issues, installing the iOS 11 beta on an iPhone that you use everyday is generally not a good idea.

Installing the iOS 11 public beta is a relatively simple task that, in most cases, shouldn't take longer than 15 or 20 minutes from start to finish. Here's the step-by-step instructions for an iPhone, which extend to the iPad and iPod touch.

Heads up! I, and many others, can't stress the fact that "iOS 11 is pre-release software". The new features, tweaks, and additions to iOS 11 are incredibly exciting but if you're not willing to accept / work around bugs, glitches, and things just not working quite right sometimes, it's best to stay on the latest stable version of iOS 10 until the fall.

Are public beta stable enough for regular uses?

Mixed bag. If it’s your day to day device, probably best to wait for public beta 2 based on what I’ve seen in past years, particularly if you are hesitant. For example, your phone may not work with your watch, or in your car, or texts might be dicey. Can be any number of things the first go round.

Some things to look out for:
- Graphics will stutter noticeably and will be laggy
- The App Switcher doesn’t work well, you will have problems closing apps
- The App Store will not receive new Today content until the fall
- The new Cover Sheet (Notification Center merged with Lock Screen)
- 3D touch is laggy (graphics)
- Certain 3rd party apps do not work/work fully (see the thread in the iOS 11 forum for details)
- Any other general inconsistencies and bugs may appear without notice

If you can handle this, then go ahead and install the beta. But if not, then wait until a later beta or the production release this fall.

Very important:
Please report your bugs with Feedback Assistant. Apple will not know you have a problem unless you tell them!

I installed it on my iPad Mini, but when I'm finishing the set up steps, the dock is always there, and blocks the button on the Dock set up screen, so I can't continue.

Im checking "General Settings" "Software Updates" and doesn't show any update and yes Im a beta registered user. BTW Im in Europe.

Are you on iOS 10 Public Beta now?

I was and to move to iOS 11 Public Beta I had to fist delete the old Profile for iOS10 in Settings > General > Profile. Then go to beta.apple.com and re-install the iOS11 profile. This triggered the iPad to restart and start downloading the iOS 11 PB.

Installed on an iPad mini. Now it won't charge (says accessory is incompatible). Heats up when just browsing through Safari. Quite a number of apps don't even open. Oh well, win some lose some. Will have to put the mini in the drawer until a functional version comes out.

UPDATE: my iPad mini IS actually CHARGING but the indicator icon just isn't working.

Same thing on my original Air. Works as expected when charging through my rMBP though.

My iPhone 7 with the beta was pretty hot this morning and ate battery like crazy for the first 20 minutes, but has seemed stable now for a couple hours while at work.

Same issue here with my iPad. So turn off rotation lock before you install the beta. I did submit a bug report with video.

Is it possible to install the Public beta over the Developer? My sub expired and for my purposes, it's not worth the $99. I removed the dev profile and installed the public profile, however software update is reporting that there's no update.
