Hi, I have a rMBP and running El Capt and I want to install Mavericks on a external SSD as I have some programs that only work with that version (iBooks Author version of my book) I have downloaded the install of Mavericks but when I go to open it to select the drive I want to install too it tells me I cannot install this version on my Mac? Is there a way round this?? Or after upgrading to El Capt I can't go back? Thanks in advance.

Try the 'createinstallmedia' command contained within the Mavericks installer.

Alternative is DiskMakerX software, no need to use Terminal if you don't want to...
