I've read on several sites that one can invoke Spotlight Search in IOS7 by swiping down from the top of any of the home pages. But all that happens when I do that is that the notification center opens. So, obviously, I am doing something wrong or I have missed a setting. Can I buy a clue or two? :D

This is what I want to see, but I don't see...notice the "search window" at the top of the page. Thanks!:

Swipe down from the middle of any home screen, not the top.
