How to keep contacts when disconnecting iCloud?

How can I keep my contacts from disappearing when I stop syncing contacts with iCloud? I don't get the option to keep them like in older versions of OS X. And when I try to save them first as a Archive and import it later, its empty still.

You export as a bunch of vCards, instead of a Contacts Archive. Then import after you disconnect iCloud. (hit Cmd+A to select all first)
