When I plug in my iPod, it syncs with iTunes, then disconnects automacally (icon disappears from desktop). How do I keep it mounted?

have you enabled firewire disk use?

there's no option to disconnect it automatically, can't imagine why it does that...

i would actually *like* it to do that most of the time, i forget to unmount it and i understand it can occasionally keep the HD spun up, which isn't good for it...

that does sound kind of odd. but try this. plug in your ipod and open up itunes. click on your ipod in the left field and you should see a little ipod button come up down by the equilizer and visualizer buttons. click on it and tell it to enable firewire disk mode. see if that helps any.

Yes, that will work. That is what that option is for. It is disbled by default on some models.
