How to keep metadata when transferring music to new computer?

Hey everyone,
I currently have a 2011 macbook pro 15" with a 1TB hard drive, and a 2012 retina MBP. I have got around 500gb of music, which is currently on my 2011 MBP. I wanted to transfer this to an external hard drive and then use on my rMBP and eventually sell my 2011 MBP.
But is there any way to keep the metadata as well (for example the play count, ratings etc.)?
