I'd like to make a short video that is something like the beginning of this. Notice how the hands use a pencil to "write" "playstation 3". I'd basically like to record my hands "drawing" something.

What sorts of apps would I need to achieve this? or would it be just too difficult?

A digital camera, a tripod and iMovie.

clearly the OP wants to know a little more than that...if they don't then I'd like a furthur explanation. Thanks

The frame rate looks like it was developed using the stop motion principles.
A still camera and a lot of single frames could achieve that effect mate.

you could invest a little money if you plan to do it for a lot of work.

But really most editing programs allow you to input still frames and set the time rates for each cell.

Make what you want to "write" in any program, then use a crop filter on it and animate it from left to right. Then add a pen. Sorry for the crappy explanation, I'm multitasking :)
