How to make iPhone photos show up in Finder?

I don't know what it is but do recall being able to see my photos via a folder/Finder why can't I see them anymore when I plug my phone in? Do I really have to use iPhoto to retrieve photos from my device?

I havent took photos off my phone in awhile but I remember going into a folder and simply dragging and dropping photos to another folder on my dekstop.

You can use the Image Capture app to import them into a folder in Finder. That may be what you did before.
