How can I free up more space on my server so I can make a Time Machine backup?

Since installing Snow Leopard on a new hard drive and migrating over my old info I haven't been able to make a Time Machine backup. I use an HP Mediasmart server that supports Time Machine. Worked fine under Leopard. I reserved about 550 GB of server space. Currently my old Leopard Time Machine backups are still on there.

When I first tried to backup from SL I was told there was not enough space. I then excluded a bunch of things to make it fit. I got really close. I was told I had 252 GB and there was only 250 GB available. So, I went and excluded another 50 GB worth of stuff. Now it tells me there's only 180 GB available space!

I can still boot my old Leopard install if needed.

I did notice that I can enter the Time Machine (even though I've never completed a backup with the new SL install). When I enter the Time Machine there is only one point in time available - August 28th 2009 at 11:20 PM. That's about the time when my old Leopard install was used before I took out the old drive and put in the new. Also, if I try to navigate to something to restore from that backup most of the user stuff has the red circle/slash through it. Guess it's looking at the old backup.
