Is there a way to make unread messages in Mail bold instead of just having that light blue dot next to them?

in the preferences under the viewing tab, there should be a box you could check to "display unread messages with bold font."

hi you could just create a 'rule' for all new mail. that way you can have it in bold or highlighted in a colour etc ....

OK much easier than my idea, but with a rule you can have fun colours!

 maybe not for everyone tho

Plus, make sure that you select a Message list font in the Fonts & Colors preferences dialog that supports bold typeface in addition to the regular one. Otherwise the selection of "display unread messages with bold font" in the Viewing preferences dialog will have no effect.

How do you make an unread message not only bold but a color? I've looked at the rules choices and I don't see a usable option. If I set a color preference for the message list font, it will color all messages, which isn't what I want. I'd like only unread messages to be bold and, say, orange so that I can see them across the room without glasses. Entourage can be set to a color; surely Mail can also. What am I missing?

There doesn't seem to be a way to highlight unread messages in a different color. If you just want to be able to easily identify unread messages, you could simply create a Smart Mailbox that only displays unread messages, limited to specific folders if you like. And unlike mail rules smart mailboxes are updated continuously.
