Having wasted several hours trying to solve this problem on more than one occasion only to ultimately find the solution is REALLY simple, I thought I'd pass it on. It's all about the IP address - the HP prints out a WRONG IP address!!
While holding down the GO button switch on the Laserjet - you will get a 'COLD RESET' message. Then press MENU on the 4000N then press ITEM twice to reach PRINT CONFIGURATION and press SELECT, it prints 2 pages. On the second page, the IP ADDRESS is shown as 0.0.0.0 - This is WRONG. (so you don't actually need to do this step!)
Now go to the App Store and buy NETWORK RADAR (about $5) when I ran it, it showed an IP ADDRESS - 10.0.0.27 with the vendor HEWLETT PACKARD. (probably won't be the same on your computer because networks are the evil spawn of the devil)
Then go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES / PRINT & SCAN and click the + sign to add a printer. Choose the IP option, choose 'HP Jetdirect - Socket', enter the IP address that Network Radar gave you in the Address box, enter a name of your choice for your printer and on the bottom line 'Use' it should come up automatically with 4000N. Did with mine and it's working perfectly. And all with no help from HP who's support is TOTAL RUBBISH.
I know it's an old printer, but it cost a fortune at the time does double sides and has an extra paper tray and is built like a tank, unlike the cheap ones they make now. And it prints very well.
