The latter didnt work as good for me since i upgraded to iTunes 9.0.1 but works great if you have a older version.

I use Audiko.net it seems pretty easy.

jailbeak. there's an app call anyringtone i believe that like $3 dollars or so. you can make a ringtone directly from your songs in your iphone, select the song sections, and have it ring.

You can do that from PhoneZap that is also in Cydia that is free and it also has more perks in that App that you might find interesting.

Yeah... This is the easiest way of going about it. No reason to jailbreak your phone just to make a friggin' ringtone.
