How to not get Data on 2G?

I have an iPhone 2G that I want to give to my mom.

She doesn't need data, nor does she need texts, and It is jailbroken, so I can change the APN/toggle EDGE via SBSettings.

I'm just wondering how you guys got AT&T to cancel it.

All the reps I've spoken to say "All iPhones are required to have a data plan".
 
I tried that.

It gave me the Connect to iTunes screen.

When I jailbroke it, I didn't check the Activate box as I didn't need to!

But I don't want to restore it NOW.
 
Ah. I found a way out.

I put her SIM in iPhone, activated with $20 data plan +200 texts.
Called AT&T, gave me the regular BS of "All iPhones require data".
"Oh really, wow didn't know that, okay, I'll just sell it and put my SIM in my current phone, can you take off the data please?"
She went through everything, took off data, the whole stuff.

I put my mom's SIM in the iPhone, and it was already activated.
 
Actually, yes I do realize that. But, I also realize that her upgrade eligibility is still at her date of 03/15/09 (That's right, she didn't buy a phone in the last 2 years, 3 months).

I'm not worried about extending her contract, because we're staying with AT&T until the end.
 
I wanna know if I did or didn't.

I mean, I don't care either way, but I still wanna know. And I want facts, not just one person saying it, I want proof.
 
You're clueless.
Just because you buy an iphone on ebay it doesnt mean its contract free.
As soon as you activate the phone thru itunes under your name and social security you agree to a 2 year term with AT&T. Does anyone even bother reading what they click on agree to thru the itunes activation process?
Now if you jailbreak and unlock without going thru the itunes activation you obviously dont sign a contract.
Itunes forces you to add on the data plan for 20 bucks a month and On the bottom of the screen, in fine print, it is written that a 2 year contract is required on all plans.
All you gotta do is make a quick call to AT&T and they'll tell you that.

You get locked into a contract when you purchase an iPhone at the subsidized price or the early upgrade price.

I misread the OP and thought his mother was already in an iPhone contract (used to all the give my 3G to someone else threads), read over everything too fast, sorry about that, doesn't mean you have to be an ass about it.
