How to pay subscriptions with iTunes credit? I.e. HBO Now

I have tons of iTunes credit in my account and I would like to pay for subscriptions using that credit instead of getting charged to the credit cards associated with my iTunes account. However, I don't see this option for apps like HBO Now.

Is there a way to do this or subscription purchase treated differently than in-app purchase?
