How to permanently change the default application for a file type?

Hi,

I am trying to change the default application for opening the text files in vain. I tried holding down the alt key and opening the file using my desired application also by open with> other and then checking the checkbox which says "always open with" box.

What ever I do, next time I double click on the file it get opened by the main default application and not my selected app.

I am trying to associate text files .txt to bbedit.


Any help is welcome.
