Hi,

I've downloaded a video file which is an .avi, I have no trouble playing back avi's on my Mac as I have the correct codec's in Quicktime and VLC installed as well.

However, what software/ additional codec's do I need so I can hear the sound when I play the .avi file with 5.1 AC3 sound?

Thnaks for any responses.

I assume that you've already installed A52Codec on the QuickTime side, since you say it works, and are asking how to get 5.1 audio instead of stereo. If you're using an optical link from your Mac to your speakers, you can do it in VLC by switching the audio device to the encoded out, but there is no way to do the equivalent in QuickTime. The closest would be to set the downmixing in A52Codec's prefs to Dolby and set your receiver to upmix using Dolby Pro Logic II. If you have an analogue 5.1 audio card, I don't know if VLC will work (it should), and there isn't anything that will work with QuickTime yet.
