Hey there
I have an avi file that I want to play. Preferably in quicktime. I dont want to install windows media player. I like the apple software. I tried installing the divx codec with no joy.

This is what it says in quicktime:

Format: 'FMP4', 720 x 576, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 44.100 kHz

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Try downloading and installing the Perian codec pack--it will likely let you play this:

http://perian.org/

...if not, try VLC. If VLC won't play it, you're probably out of luck.

One thing that DEFINITELY won't work is Windows Media Player--the Mac version of it is archaic and never played AVIs anyway, while QuickTime does, so long as it has the correct codec. Microsoft has ditched it entirely in favor of a 3rd party Quicktime codec that plays wmv files (better than theirs ever did, and in QT Player), in fact.

I thought FMP4 was just a variant of MP4, so I'm a little surprised that DivX didn't do it, but either Perian or VLC should.

thanks for that :)
its playing in quicktime, and the format now reads:

Format: MPEG-4 (Perian), 720 x 576, Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo, 44.100 kHz

cheers!

QuickTime can't handle MPEG-4 in AVI contatiners, which is why you need Perian here. QuickTime has a lot of trouble handling stuff in AVI containers; dunno why. DivX wouldn't have helped you. Neither would the Flip4Mac WMV components.

How does Perian help QT?

I have the same problem with an .avi, just a blank screen in QT. I downloaded Perian and installed it but I do not know how to make it help QT to actually play the .avi. Sorry if this sounds really dumb but can anyone advise? Eric

If you've installed Perian, it's automatically working--it will kick in on any video file you open in Quicktime player that it's capable of handling.

If that's not helping (and assuming it's installed properly), then either the file includes a codec that Perian can't handle or there's something wrong with the file. Does VLC work, and what video format is it reporting?

It works!

Thanks Makosuke, it works now. I think I had to exit QT then restart it to get the Perian going.
