My MKV's are playing horribly now on VLC. Plex only works for Intel. Mplayer isn't playing the MKVs well either. Any suggestions?

Thank you, I read that. The only thing it suggests besides VLC and Mplayer is Perian, which i installed and the MKVs still do not play well on Quicktime even after Perian was installed. I've got a PowerPC 2.3 dual with 4gb ram, so i think the MKV files should be playing well. Anybody?

how do i figure where the codecs are listed?

the short MKV files tend to play well on VLC, but the big ones dont

Open the file in Quicktime and look under Window -> Show Movie Properties. If QT can't open it, use MPEG Streamclip (freebie) to get the same info. Along with the codecs, you should check out the resolution of the video and the bitrate of both the video and audio. Those may provide clues as to why it's not performing well on your system.

Also, is this a single processor/single core PMG5?
