So, I have transferred a couple of movies from my iMac to a SanDisk thumb drive and when I plug that drive into my iPad, they show up under the iPAD IOS 13 FILES app as being on the Sandisk. But I cannot figure out how to transfer the files from the thumb drive to a directory on the iPad or if they have to stay in the FILES directory, how to create a subdirectory in there. And then, of course, there is the question of which other app will read and play the videos in that FILES or some other directory.

Are there steps written out for this, or a video in which the narrator doesn't speak at 200 words a minute? Thanks!

At the moment the full possibilities are not unlocked but it's definitely possible to do what you want. Install a video player you like that has access to Files. VLC is free and can play most anything.

- Plug your usb drive and start VLC.
- Tap the cone in the top left and choose "Cloud Services" (not a great name for this as it allows local access too!).
- Tap Cloud Services again and you will be shown the Files browser.
- Tap Browse and you should see all your sources, including your USB drive.
- Tap a video you'd like to import here and it will be copied to VLC locally

Here's where things get a bit more powerful! Now that you've added one video locally VLC will have added a folder in the On My iPad/iPhone section in Files! From here on out you can use the Files app to freely manage video files within that sandbox, including multiple files at a time.

- Exit VLC for now and go to the Files app
- Navigate to your USB drive and select as many video files as you like
- Copy and paste these to On my iPad/IPhone -> VLC
- When you open VLC again you should be able to see and play these files
- Enjoy!
