Every time I put a CD into my MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard, May 2010) it creates an icon on my desktop and side bar, entitled "Untitled CD 1" "Untitled CD 2" etc etc until I have 16 or 20 of these which have to be deleted or ejected from either place (and from the sidebar 1 at a time!) This continues to happen even if I uncheck "CDs DVDs, and iPods" in Finder preferences.

I can't think of any reason a user would want this non-functional clutter to build up. When would you have a reason to click on an icon for a CD that is no longer in your computer. I DO want a icon to show for a CD or DVD that is actually IN my computer at the time, but how can I stop this baffling build up of useless icons on my desktop and sidebar?

That's not normal. Try repairing permissions in Disk Utility, something may be not clearing itself out (a cache or something like that).
