Hi all!
Just looking for some advice. My situation is that the Photos app is 'stuck' uploading 270 items. The photo/video count is correct between my 2 Macs, iPad, iPhone & everything seems to be syncing properly (a new photo populates almost instantly across all devices as well as any edits made).

Points to consider:

  • All devices are on the latest iOS/macOS
  • Mac with the issue has photos set to optimize storage
  • This has been happening for at least a few weeks maybe even a month or two
  • Everything was going along as expected and this happened seemingly at random. Also, I got a new MacBook and did a Time Machine restore and the issue still carried over
  • The Mac has been left open and connected to power during this time and have tried both with Photos open & quit
I don't believe this is ever going to resolve itself. I'm thinking the next step is to start over with the Photos library basically as if I just signed into a new computer but I don't want to erase the whole Mac and start fresh. As far as I know, the best way to do this is to simply delete ~/Pictures/Photos Library file, open Photos, and create a new library making sure the preferences are set to Optimize Mac Storage. Then give the Mac time to download and sort itself out.

  1. Do you have any different suggestions to try first?
  2. Do you agree with starting fresh?
  3. Do you agree with the method mentioned above to start fresh?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello,

I've exactly the same problem as you.

I tried to rebuild my photo library (alt+cmd) but the problem is the same.

Do you have find any solution ?

I have not found a solution but I’ve had other priorities lately. Issue is still present, however...

unless there are any other suggestions, my next step is to delete the library file and just have it start over.

I think about this "solution" too.

In Activity Monitor the "photolibraryd" process is constantly very High. Is it the same for you ?

I had this on macOS and just created a new library. I still have a similar thing in iOS where it says downloading 850 photos and it never does unless I open some photos which seem low quality and then it downloads and the count goes down. But I don’t want to log off my iCloud account cause then I has to sync EVERYTHING again

Just checked & it's at ~50% CPU & I haven't used Photos in a while.

I've just encountered the same problem so I performed a Force Quit on the photolibraryd process within activity monitor as it was sitting on 0% CPU load. Photos complained about an error and that a quit / relaunch was in order.

I relaunched Photos and filtered Activity Monitor to "photo" and I can now see CPU activity on the various 'photo' processes including image and video conversion processes. The progress bar in Photos > Prefs > iCloud is now active

Hope this helps. Cheers, JAYTEE
