I use it often and would rather not have to go all the way up to the menu bar. I would prefer a mouse solution but keyboard would do in a pinch. However I never remember those.

CMD A like mentioned above. There is a keyboard app (forgot name) that automatically gives notification of keyboard shortcut when you use the mouse to do something. In general, keyboard shortcuts are the fastest and if you switch cmd with control on windows, they are cross platform. Most common ones are:
CMD A = select all
CMD C = copy
CMD X = cut
CMD V = paste
CMD B = bold
CMD I = italic
CMD U = underline
CMD R = refresh
CMD W = close window
CMD Q = quit program (Mac only)
