how to record sound in Tiger?

I'm sure this is a really dumb and I'm missing something obvious BUT.....

You used to be able to record new sound alerts, but in Tiger I can't figure out how to do it. Now, if I go to Sound in Perferences, I see no option for recording. You change what the input is, but how do I use it to record?

Use Quicktime Player. (You'll probably need QT Pro)

Select "New audio recording" from the file player, select your input from the Sound preferences, mic, line or whatever your interface provides.

Record your sound.

Export as an aiff file.

Edit to length in whatever editor you use (you can do it in QT but it's clumsy) add whatever FX you require.

Save as an aiff.

Put the file in System>Library>Sounds

Choose new sound with the Sound preferences.

Theres also Audacity. Which is free, but very respectable (even supports VST plugins). You can also edit your audio with this e.g. chop out unwanted portions.
 
here's another way

I tried audacity but when I tried to record it only made whining noises, I'm not sure what I did wrong.

I did find one roundabout way to do it - imovie. Probably not the best way but for my purposes it worked fine.
 
Wiretap will record any audio playing through your computer, but I'm not positive it will work for your situation. It's not a freeware app anymore, but I'm pretty sure you can still use all but the advanced features without restrictions pre-registration.

Probably not what you had in mind, but there is a command line recorder included with Xcode. The project is in /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/Services/AudioFileTools/ With that built, afrecord x.aiff -f AIFF would do the basic thing from the console. (The sample lies about pressing any key, it wants you to press return.)

Huh. The license on that bit of sample code is rather liberal. It might be a nice thing for someone feeling bored to wrap into a little GUI (even Applescript) and throw out there all built.

I don't mind using Terminal. Just one small problem: I'm pretty pressed for space on my iBook (60 GB HD and a 36.76 GB iTunes library), so actually yesterday, I got rid of the Examples and the ADC Documentation from the Developer folder, because I never used them... :eek:

Quite a coincident... :)

Luckily I did zip the two folders up and burn them onto a CD before deleting... :D
