I usually start from the light port then way work my way up removing the commuter series case iPhone 6 am I doing it correctly will that hard shell back scratch the lighting port ?

Alex, there are literally dozens of YouTube videos that show folks putting on and taking off Otterbox Commuter cases from their iPhone 6's.

My point is that a quick YouTube search would be more beneficial because there are so many videos showing exactly what you're asking, which (for most people) would be far more helpful than reading text descriptions.

How do you know that's the correct answer? Maybe contact Otterbox directly, they should know if removing their cases has any ill effect.
