google says its under system preferences, general, and id see an option to turn them off, but theres no option for anything like that?

You are close....
That setting is under Finder Preferences. Not in System Preferences
but under the Finder menu/Preferences.
Click anywhere on your desktop, so you can see Finder next to the Apple menu.
Click on Finder/Preferences, then General tab. There is a list of several items for Show these Items on the Desktop. You can turn off whatever you like.
