I've read all the usual books like the Missing Manual for OS 9, Mac OS In A Nutshell, The Little Mac Book...But none has the answer to a sticky problem.
I still use mac OS 9.0. I have a blueberry iMac with just a CD-Rom drive. When I get .pdf files from file-sharing websites, some of them are in a .pdf/.rar archive.
When I try to unstuff the file with Stuffit Expander, I get an error code that says something, but I know what it means: the file name is too long.
So then I try to use the old MacUnRar program to check it. I open the file and see the pdf icon in the window and a short file name. But if I move the file slightly, you see a long file name (probably created with WinRar on a Windoze computer). If I try to drag the file from the window to my desktop, the computer crashes and I have to restart; you can't place files with long names on the desktop or anywhere on a mac.
MacUnRar does not allow you to rename the file. You can only get info on the file.
My question is: How can you rename the file before you unstuff (or unrar) it?
I tried renaming the file in the data fork with Resourcerer, but it dammages the file and it won't open. I also tired the batch file renamer softwares, but they only rename the contents of folders, NOT stuffit archives.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely, Nerd Of Honor
