So after tonight, when OS 4 has come out, what's the easiest way to restore a 3GS to 3.1.3 and preserve the jailbreak, for sale on eBay?

There is no point. 4.0 is already jailbroken. If you already updated the baseband with 3.1.3 or 4.0 then you lost unlock for now which is where you make your money not on the JB.

I'm running iOS 4.0 with the 5.11.07 baseband on my 3GS both jailbroken and unlocked.

My phone is unlocked by O2, so no worries about that.
Since I was happy to wait for the official firmware to be out, I didn't look into the JB for OS 4 yet, but I presume it's easy enough to find with the help of a little Google.

Agreed. Unlocking is the money-maker. Most people assume they can do the jailbreak themselves.

To answer your question, though, your iTunes may still have the 3.1.3 firmware on the hard drive. If you do ALT-restore in iTunes for Mac, or CTRL-restore for Windows, it will let you select what file to use for the firmware. If it's not there, do a google search and you can download it. Make sure you download the 3GS version specifically.

Ah! But iTunes won't let you install OLDER OS versions that easily anymore, unless you re-direct the restore through Saurik's server!

I don't know about that. I had 3.1.2 and restored to 3.1.2 easily with the method I posted above. Otherwise, it sounds like you know the workaround, so do that.

By the way, this won't preserve the jailbreak, but just do the blackrain jailbreak after you do this. It takes less than 5 minutes.

I'm confused. Why on earth would you upgrade to 4.0 then want to downgrade back to 3.1.3? Why are you upgrading in the first place if you are going to sell it?
