This you will not find in the user guide.
All it says is that the usb-c port is for "service only".
But I have had to do a full restore before for atv2 and atv3. So it will be useful to know how to do it for the atv4.
So here are instructions for how to restore the atv4.
But there is a problem with it. Apple needs to update itunes before people receive the new atv. (EDIT: Well they haven't. So first method below may still be problematic.)
There are theoretically 2 ways to restore it via itunes. It can also be restored via xcode, but most people will want to do it through itunes.
You have to have a usb-c to usb-a cable for most macs (or a usb-c to usb-c for the new macbook).
Method 1 (which doesn't work with the current version of itunes - which is why I want a new itunes before people receive the new atv).
This is very similar to how we are used to doing it for atv 2 and 3 and ipod touches, iphones and ipads.
Download the tvOS ipsw restore image for atv4. I won't put the link here but just google AppleTV5,3_9.0_13T396_Restore.ipsw and it should be easy to find.
Connect the atv to the computer with the usb-c cable. You may also connect to your tv with hdmi at the same time if you want to, but that is only to see that it has been installed properly after it restarts.
Open itunes.
IF itunes recognises the atv (and that seems to be the problem with the current itunes - it often DOESN'T recognise it) then select the atv in source list.
Hold option key and click restore.
Select the ipsw file. Click Open.
Connect to network to complete activation.
Method 2 (with the current itunes problem we seem to be forced to use this method at the moment)
Connect the atv to the mac via usb-c cable.
Put atv into recovery mode as follows:
With the remote press and hold MENU and Play/Pause for 6 seconds until the indicator light flashes rapidly.
Select the atv in source list in itunes.
Hold option key and click restore.
Select the ipsw file. Click Open.
Connect to network to complete activation
