I recently discovered that I had a lot of infection under my iCloud and my apple devices in general. Some sort of rare malware bug. I have a time machine backup and would really just like to extract some video or audio files from it. Or pics. Without reinfecting myself without whatever may be on that drive.

Should I bother or play it safe and wipe it?

If you just open the TM backup on the drive and only copy over the audio and video files you need and nothing else, that should not reinfect you with whatever malware you had.
