Just picked a Mac book pro and wanted to use it to download my canon raw files when I go away.Iphoto turns them into jpegs and I want them saved in raw.I have no cd / DVD drive to download my canon software. Is there a way to do it without buying an external reader?

You should be able to go to Canon's website and download all your programs there. I assume the most important one for you will be the EOS Utility. I update all my Canon programs directly from their site. As long as you registered your camera, which I believe is one of the prerequisites to being able to download from Canon's site.

The other alternatives are getting an external drive or using another mac that has Remote Disc plus disc drive and doing it that way.

Unless your apple raw needs updating for a newer camera, iPhoto should be reading and storing the CR2s natively. But if you shoot a lot, consider lightroom.
