I've recently bought the WD Passport 500GB drive. I plan on using it for Time Machine, but I didn't want to allocate all of the space for it. I want to leave about 100gb extra for movies, songs, and such. So a partition is required from what I have gathered so far. Should i format it to be capable for Time Machine right away, or partition it first then format that partition?

Thanks

Partition using Disk Utility, then format each partition the way you want.
