how to set up ichat to work

I've tried to setup iChat through both my @mac.com and AIM accounts, but each time I try to connect I get the error message: iChat can't communicate . . . etc.

Any ideas as to how to get iChat to communicate. I've been able to setup Skype and Yahoo Messager without problems, but this iChat is confounding.
