Hello,

In the office that I work we have 5 computers and we would like to share an external drive that is plugged in one of the iMacs. How would be the best and secure way to do it.

I was looking at the sharing window in preferences but I don't know if there's a security issue that I need to know.

Thanks for the help.

The Sharing preference pane is the way to go, you can set permissions (read or read/write) and limit the users/accounts, if you want.

And how can I set a password to that shared drive?

I don't want visitors in the office to connect to that drive when using the wifi

Via creating another account on your Mac and then limiting the access to your shared external HDD to that account, with which the other users have to login to your Mac.
Maybe there is another way though.

Can anyone tell me how to share the external hard drive with a password in the same network.

I don't know if this is right, but if it's not hopefully someone will correct me and you'll have your answer ;)

On the iMac, create user accounts for all the users on your network (with the same usernames and passwords).

Then in the sharing pane, share the ext disk, allowing only your newly created "network" users read/write permissions (no guest access). This way the users on the network will automatically send their credentials (username and password) to the network share automatically and will not have to manually type a password. Anyone else will be asked for a username and password.

Just guessing though, this is may not be "best practice".
