How to share files wirelessly across external drives?

I use a wireless home network to share files between my iMac and a Mac Mini which I use for business. Recently I reorganised my directories to place some of my documents and media on an external drive. Now it appears that items I select for sharing on the external drive are not shown on the Mac Mini. How do I do this?
