I'm in Chicago bought a mac book for my sister in South Korea. cause going though payment process in Apple Korea site is pain in the ass.

Any recommendations on shipping mac book to South Korea?

You can use a private carrier like dhl or the postal system. The key risks are damage and theft. Anything you can do to make it look less sellable will help with the later. I would take off the bottom cover, battery and drive and ship them separately.

Is theft so common in the US that this is a real risk? I'd just pack the original box in another box to add some extra padding to protect from damage, insure it, and then send it. The vast majority of items shipped arrive safely... so why lose sleep over something that can be easily replaced. It's not like it's a priceless heirloom.

US -> US theft is not. OP was asking about US -> Korea. International shipments go through customs review in the destination country, which often involve the opening of packages and reviewing of the contents. Things have a tendency to disappear during this step. Leaving a shiny new MB in its shiny new box is just asking for it.

And it is not a good idea to ship a Macbook internationally through a shipping agency ! Better to carry along or send it through a person rather than a shipping company !

buy the shipping insurance.. it won't be cheap to ship though... may be better to bring it over when you visit..

I've never had an international package lost that I've ordered or sent including 1 laptop. I agree with removing it from its original packaging and placing into a new smaller box, pair that with insurance and you should be fine. Maybe you could get it engraved?
