I am wondering if I sold my iPad mini in eBay, how do I ship it to the buyer? I heard that the USPS had already banned shipping lithium batteries, and I'm in Hawaii right now. And how much does it cost to ship an iPad mini?

EDITED: It appears that shipping an item with an li-ion battery within the United States *may* be fine according to some sites, since it's non removeable; the regulations appear unclear though. There are definite issues with trying to ship it internationally.

https://www.usps.com/ship/shipping-restrictions.htm

Whether or not it can be done & how much it would cost is probably best figured out at your local post office.

EDIT 2: I think this section probably covers it, and seems to say that so long as you package appropriately according to their guidelines, it's fine to ship one domestically and without special labeling. I'd probably still suggest you confirm that though.

  1. Installed in Equipment. The following additional restrictions apply to the mailing of lithium metal cells or batteries properly installed in the equipment they operate:
    1. The batteries installed in the equipment must be protected from damage and short circuit.
    2. The equipment must be equipped with an effective means of preventing it from being inadvertently turned on or activated.
    3. The equipment must be cushioned to prevent movement or damage and be contained in a strong enough sealed package to prevent crushing of the package or exposure of the contents during normal handling in the mail.
    4. For lithium metal cells and batteries containing no more than 0.3 gram of lithium content, no mailpiece may exceed 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds). There is no maximum number of cells or batteries per mailpiece.
    5. For lithium metal cells containing more than 0.3 gram but no more than 1.0 gram of lithium content, and batteries containing more than 0.3 gram but no more than 2.0 grams of lithium content, no mailpiece may exceed 5 kilograms (11 pounds). Each mailpiece may contain a maximum of 8 cells or 2 batteries, with no more than 1.0 gram of lithium content per cell or 2.0 grams of lithium content per battery.
    6. Mailpieces are not required to bear markings or labels identifying the contents as lithium batteries. Mailers may optionally use a DOT-approved lithium battery handling label, in domestic air or surface transportation.

What kind of mail box would you suggest to ship an iPad mini though?

Hopefully you kept the original packaging, so use that. It is very protective. If not, wrap in bubble wrap and put in a sturdy rectangular box. Wrap it enough there is no shake in your shipping box.
This is my opinion, I'm not sure if it passes the smell test for post office regulations. It would work in the lower 48 as I've used this approach with success.

Use USPS Priority Mail. With the dimensions and weight of the Mini, your best choice will be regular Priority packaging rather than the Fixed Rate boxes. Use plenty of bubble wrap and enclose the original Mini box in a slightly larger one with bubble wrap between them. Insure as appropriate. I've shipped dozens of items with Priority Mail and have had nothing but excellent experiences.

Always always always double box anything fragile. If you don't still have the original Mini box, find something around the same size & pack the Mini securely in there with plenty of padding to make sure it can't move--packing paper is generally inadequate for this sort of thing, you need styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap. Shake that inner box once it's closed to make sure it isn't going anywhere. Then put it into a larger box as suggested with still more peanuts or bubble wrap. Again, make sure the outer box doesn't make noise when shaken, and everything should ship fine.

Why not check with FedEx? They deliver most Apple products to Canada from the USA. They can also supply boxes, packing materials and I'm sure give helpful packing suggestions.

Great advice here. Always ship with USPS priority with signature confirmation if you're accepting payment with paypal. So you're eligible under seller protection.
