How to shutdown mac by force quitting all apps

Hi,

I sometimes get "xxx app is preventing the computer from shutting down" messages when I try to shutdown my mac on 10.8.5.

Is there an option to force quit all open apps and shut down?

You can type sudo shutdown -h now in the terminal.

Thanks, is there a way to trigger it using a hotkey. Maybe I can use keyboard maestro to run that command.

Ideally, you should find out why you are getting these messages, and fix the problem, rather than killing the process.

My 15" rMBP does this and its always been Apple Mail as the problem.
