How to software unlock 16 GB 1.1.3?

I am new to this whole thing but I want to understand how to software unlock my new 16 GB iphone. I have att here but I live part time in another country and want to be able to use my other country's sim win I am there.

Is there an easy answer? I see companies that claim they can do it for money, but I don't want to pay and I don't know if I trust them. Is there a free option available that works?

plug iphone into dock, close itunes
put iphone in recovery mode (press and hold power + home, until apple appears, then hold home - wait until you see the connect to itunes logo)
